On
Tuesday 10th. May 2005, Westcliff and District WIZO held their Annual
Jewish Women’s Week Luncheon. 120 Ladies, including a large contingent of
S.W.H.C. Ladies Guild ladies, sat down to a smoked salmon lunch catered by the
Committee. Theatre Critic, Ruth Leon, Mrs. Sheridan Morley was their Guest
speaker and Joanna Wulwick, Vice Chairman of the National Jewish Women’s Week
Campaign was also present.
Joanna told the audience, that the 2005 Campaign would be raising funds to
support WIZO’s Projects in Israel which help needy families cope with the
difficulties many of them have to face.
Ruth Leon talked about her life as a
Theatre Critic in London and in New York. She also recounted her experiences
living with the Morley family, and in particular Gladys Cooper, who was her
husband’s grandmother.
Ruth also talked about Marilyn Monroe,
Noel Coward and George Gershwin, who were all subjects of biographies, that she
had written. Many of the ladies wanted to ask further questions but because we
had promised to keep to the Agenda and finish on time, regrettably we had to
close the proceedings with many questions unasked! Westcliff Wizo President,
Sonia Helper gave the vote of thanks in her own inimitable way.
The total proceeds of the lunch came to
£1,550 the result of a very generous Raffle and table prize raffle. 120 WIZO
ladies had had a very enjoyable day whilst strengthening their bond with Israel
and making a difference to the lives of so many Israeli citizens.
