| Driving along Alexandra Road the
unmistakable shape of the building fell into view. If it wasn't for the
temporary banner strewn across the front archway and a square emblem
covering the once familiar Magen David at the front highest point, no
changes to the structure of the building are apparent. This was Alexandra
Road shul just as I remembered it. An eerie feeling passed through me as I
walked up those familiar stairs. I just didn't know what to expect.
Standing there, camera in hand, feeling quite awkward and a little
imposing, I rang the bell and stood there in trepidation. A pleasant young
lady answered the door and I attempted to explain my presence. She
introduced me to the joint owner, Bryan Woodford. Top priority is
security. Regulations do not allow unknown people to mingle with the
children and taking photographs was definitely out of the question. This I
respected. Fortunately, today the children were downstairs to the rear of
what was once the communal hall, congregant overflow area and where many a
kiddushim took place. Bryan was happy to show me round anywhere the
children were not present. My luck was in. |
