The Society was formed in January 1952 with the aim of raising money for Jewish charities, most of which have since been amalgamated into Jewish Care.  We are Jewish Care’ support group in this town and work closely with them for their interests in this area.  Our Society is registered with the Charities Commission and we have three main aims.

  1. We support Raymond House, a Jewish Care residential home for the elderly looking over the cliffs and the sea in Southend. By raising funds we provide much needed extra amenities to make the residents’ lives happier.  We also organise volunteer groups to assist in the daily running of the Home and to interact with the residents.  There is a Shul at Raymond House and our Society organises Shabbat and Yom Tov services there.

  1. We have important links with the elderly living in Shebson Lodge, Jewish Care’s warden assisted flats. We are there to provide help should they need it.  They are situated above the Community Centre in Cobham Road, Westcliff.

  1. The Community Centre is open most of the week to provide meals and activities for a large number of people living in the area.  Many are brought in on our buses which the Aid Society bought for this use, or whenever they are needed.  The Chai Group meets regularly there and is an important group formed to help those with Alzheimers Disease who need special stimulation.  It is possible to visit the hairdresser or to buy kosher items in the shop opened by the Aid Society and run by members of the Community Centre.

We are always looking for volunteers to work at Raymond House or the Community Centre, or those who feel they would enjoy working on the Aid Society to raise much needed funds.  We run quizzes, outings and have a wide programme of fund raising activities through the year.

For further information regarding the Aid Society, Raymond House, Shebson Lodge and the Community Centre please telephone either the Chairman or Secretary.
